Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction was the first ship building company in Korea, established in 1937 at Youngdo, Pusan as "Chosun Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.", according to their website. The company builds everything from hospitals to apartment buildings through its construction segment and patrol boats to oil tankers through its shipbuilding segment.

Company has a growing record of fatal work-related accidents. Since it started its operation in 2006, 27 workers have died. 2 workers died last January 18, 2008. March 11, 2008, 3 workers died during their work in Hanjin shipyard. Latest is the death of 2 workers. Workers describe the work conditions in the shipyard as "deadly, deplorable and scandalous" and stated that despite 10,000 or more workers are employed, no medical facility is existing inside the shipyard. Another worker died last July 13, 2008, the 13th fatality for this year alone.
